Most likely, the origin of the term comes from the woven fabric satin, which has a smooth, lustrous face. But regardless of the source of the term, in woodworking, there are a few characteristics that are common to most types of satinwood: Medium to high density,Fine textured, High natural luster, Interlocked grain (producing mottle figureāespecially on quartersawn surfaces)
Given the above characteristics, this only leaves perhaps a handful of woods that would properly fit the bill. But just because a wood possesses certain characteristics doesnāt necessarily mean that it ought to be labeled āsatinwood.ā With the initial qualifications laid out to help us understand what type of woods weāre generally describing, letās dig into semantics and find out which wood(s) should be called āsatinwood,ā and which should not.
So what should be considered āgenuineā satinwood, and what shouldnāt? Regardless of recent trends or marketing campaigns, thereās been only two species of satinwood that have historically been accepted as satinwood in its truest sense, and both are in the Rutaceae family (which also includes the Citrus genus, containing Orange, Lemon, Lime, etc. trees).
