Belomonte was one of the four parishes into which the Sé was divided in 1582, taking the name of S. João Baptista de Belomonte, being extinguished in 1592 by order of Bishop Jerónimo de Meneses and integrated into the parish of S. Nicolau. This Bishop was rector of the University of Coimbra and Bishop of Miranda. He held the Bishopric in Porto between 1593 and 1600.
Having behind S. Domingos and on the left Rua Ferreira Borges, (who goes up the street), starts here Rua de Belomonte, so called because at the end, and before Largo de S. João Novo where it ends, there was a cross called the Belmonte pattern.
It is a very old street, but it is mentioned for the first time in a deed from 1503, in which thirty yards of floors were leased to the armorer Álvaro Gonçalves to build five houses there... Álvaro Gonçalves is a character referred to in the historical novel A Última Dona de São Nicolau, an episode in the History of Porto in the 19th century. XV (1864) by Arnaldo Gama.

Belomonte foi uma das quatro freguesias em que a da Sé se dividiu em 1582, ficando com o nome de S. João Baptista de Belomonte, sendo extinta em 1592 por ordem do Bispo D. Jerónimo de Meneses e integrada na freguesia de S. Nicolau. Este Bispo foi reitor da Universidade de Coimbra e Bispo de Miranda. Exerceu o Bispado no Porto entre 1593 e 1600.
Tendo atrás S. Domingos e à esquerda a Rua Ferreira Borges, (quem sobe a rua), inicia-se aqui a Rua de Belomonte, assim chamada porque no fim, e antes do Largo de S. João Novo onde termina, existia um cruzeiro denominado Padrão de Belmonte.
É uma rua antiquíssima mas que aparece referida pela primeira vez numa escritura de 1503, na qual se aforavam trinta varas de chãos ao armeiro Álvaro Gonçalves para aí se construir cinco moradias...
